1. Ban rodeos -  Ban rodeos in New Zealand. Rodeos involve cruelty, pain and death for animals, and teach children it is acceptable to exploit animals for human entertainment. [more information]

  2. Intensive Farming – Abolish all intensive farming in New Zealand by 1 January 2020, including farrowing crates, fattening pens and all hen cages. [more information]

  3. Animal Testing - Work towards New Zealand becoming the first country in the world to ban all testing on animals by 1 January 2022. [more information]

  4. Slaughterhouse Monitoring - Make it mandatory for cameras to be installed in slaughterhouses and provide funding for monitoring the cameras.  [more information]

  5. Greyhound Racing - Ban greyhound racing.  [more information]

  6. Sentencing – Develop sentencing guidelines for animal cruelty offences and treat cruelty to animals as an aggravating factor under the Sentencing Act 2002. [more information]

  7. The Link – recognise the link between animal cruelty, child abuse, and domestic violence, and include animals as “protected persons” under the Domestic Violence Act 1995. [more information]

  8. Shelter & Transport – provide adequate shelter for all species of farmed animals and develop higher standards of stock transportation to ensure animal trauma is minimised. [more information]

  9. Commissioner For Animals – appoint an independent Commissioner for Animals, modelled on those appointed to represent other vulnerable members of the community, such as children. The Commissioner will be an advocate for all animals – farm, companion and wild. [more information]

  10. Surgical Mutilation – prohibit surgical procedures such as docking of dogs’ tails, the shortening of cows’ tails, de-barking, ear cropping, de-clawing, etc. [more information]

  11. Painful Devices – prohibit the sale, possession, or use of devices that inflict pain and suffering on animals, including electric shock collars, gin traps, electric prodders, fireworks, etc. [more information]

  12. Animals In Entertainment – establish stringent regulations for the use of animals in entertainment, including racing. The use of animals in marine parks, rodeos and circuses should be banned. [more information]

  13. Legal Personhood - Enshrine in the Animal Welfare Act 1999 and the New Zealand Bill of Rights Act 1990 legal personality for animals. [more information]

  14. Live Export - Ban the live export of animals. [more information]

  15. Chaining – Ban the permanent chaining of dogs and the permanent tethering of goats. [more information]

  16. Animal Agriculture - Recognise that intensive dairy and meat farming are environmentally unsustainable and promote horticulture and other more sustainable land uses. [more information]

  17. Ban the production, import and sale of foie gras. [more information]

Animal Agenda Aotearoa is a campaign to persuade New Zealand's main political parties to adopt animal-friendly policies for the 2017 general election.


The Agenda has 17 main points covering law changes needed to improve the lives of animals.  This election we are asking politicians to agree to implement the following 17 animal welfare agenda items for a more compassionate New Zealand:
