Dear [MP]

I am a member of your constituency and seek your help to protect animals this election. Please use your influence to convince your party to support the Animal Agenda Aotearoa.

This election we are asking politicians to agree to implement to the following ten points:

  1. Ban rodeos -  Ban rodeos in New Zealand. Rodeos involve cruelty, pain and death for animals, and teach children it is acceptable to exploit animals for human entertainment.

  2. Intensive Farming – Abolish all intensive farming in New Zealand by 1 January 2020, including farrowing crates, fattening pens and all hen cages.

  3. Animal Testing - Work towards New Zealand becoming the first country in the world to ban all testing on animals by 1 January 2022.

  4. Slaughterhouse Monitoring - Make it mandatory for cameras to be installed in slaughterhouses and provide funding for monitoring the cameras.

  5. Greyhound Racing - Ban greyhound racing.

  6. Sentencing – Develop sentencing guidelines for animal cruelty offences and treat cruelty to animals as an aggravating factor under the Sentencing Act 2002.

  7. The Link – recognise the link between animal cruelty, child abuse, and domestic violence, and include animals as “protected persons” under the Domestic Violence Act 1995.

  8. Shelter & Transport – provide adequate shelter for all species of farmed animals and develop higher standards of stock transportation to ensure animal trauma is minimised.

  9. Commissioner For Animals – appoint an independent Commissioner for Animals, modelled on those appointed to represent other vulnerable members of the community, such as children. The Commissioner will be an advocate for all animals – farm, companion and wild.

  10. Surgical Mutilation – prohibit surgical procedures such as docking of dogs’ tails, the shortening of cows’ tails, de-barking, ear cropping, de-clawing, etc.

  11. Painful Devices – prohibit the sale, possession, or use of devices that inflict pain and suffering on animals, including electric shock collars, gin traps, electric prodders, fireworks, etc.

  12. Animals In Entertainment – establish stringent regulations for the use of animals in entertainment, including racing. The use of animals in marine parks, rodeos and circuses should be banned. [

  13. Legal Personhood - Enshrine in the Animal Welfare Act 1999 and the New Zealand Bill of Rights Act 1990 legal personality for animals.

  14. Live Export - Ban the live export of animals.

  15. Chaining – Ban the permanent chaining of dogs and the permanent tethering of goats.

  16. Animal Agriculture - Recognise that intensive dairy and meat farming are environmentally unsustainable and promote horticulture and other more sustainable land uses.

Please respond to my letter with your and your party's position on the Animal Agenda Aotearoa so I can make an informed decision about who to vote for this election.
